The centre also organized a National Conference on
“Indigenous Technology, Livelihood Options and
Habitat Utilization: Concepts and Perspectives of
Development” at Guwahati 22nd-24th
November 2009
The conference highlighted the
resources of this region ranging from its rich
biodiversity to archaeological and cultural heritage
which could be a unique resource base for
diversified research for
social scientist and the environmentalist
around the world. To preserve, conserve and
exploit resources in a diversified and balanced
manner through a viable development model of
Sustainability is of utmost necessity from a global
perspective. The conference reiterated the
significance of North East India in the global
discourse of sustainability.
Issues like marginality, environmental concerns,
equity, differential
allocation of resources, and other specific
concerns were addressed through parameters such as
Indigenous Knowledge, Indigenous Technology, choices
of livelihood options, Habitat utilization and other
issues.
The conference tried to
explore the contemporary discourse of indigenous
knowledge and technology, habitat utilization, and
livelihood options as important yardstick to ensure
sustainable development for the developing world
with a view to augmenting research already
undertaken in these areas. The National Conference
aimed to
Identify partners and
potential areas of sustainable growth like the uses
of indigenous technology, practices of different
livelihood options and effective utilization and
focused on Optimum utilization of the existing
resources and potentials available in India with
special emphasis on Northeast
India
The conference was
attended by scholars and intellectuals from all over
India and was inaugurated by Mr .Pradyut Bordoloi,
Honble Minister of Power and Industry,Govt.of
Assam , Mr Armoogum Parsuramen, Director UNESCO
office, New Delhi and UNESCO representation
India,Bhutan,Maldives and SriLanka and IGNOU Pro
Vice Chancellors Prof O.P. Mishra and Prof K.R.
Srivathyan.Dr Sujata Dutta Hazarika Deputy
Director(NECRD) convenor of the conference welcomed
the delegates and congratulated the participants who
came from all over the country on selection of
their papers by the academic committee through the
rigorous process.She also expressed gratitude to
experts in sustainability-Professor Dulal Goswami,
Professor Chandnan Mahanta,Professor Arun
Chattapadhya, Prof Mrinal
Miri and Kashi Nath Hazarika who shared
their insights and work. Dr Anil Ch. Borah Deputy
Director (NECRD) delivered the vote of thanks.
Besides proposing a
Development Consortium on North East India with a
Private-public and govt partnership the conference
recommended that CSR (Corporate
Social responsibility) of corporate
conglomerates as a effective instrument that could
be channelized into North East through effective
partnership for grass root development.
