INTRODUCTION
Energy
security and energy independency has taken centre-stage
in every decision making throughout the world and
sustainable and equitable development is the most
important challenge before mankind in the present
century. This is also likely to be one of the critical
issues in the rural areas of developing countries
including India. After food, most pressing concern is
energy for a decent living and for meeting the needs of
production activities in the rural areas. The energy
consumption has been recognized world wide as a
parameter of development in any society.
A general characteristics of under-deveopled areas
including the north-east India is near total dependence
on the biomass fuels for meeting their energy
requirement by vast majority of the population. Severe
pressure is created on the forest there by affecting the
environment. Therefore, promotion and utilization of
renewable energy is one of the ways out to meet the
challenge on environmental degradation.
The energy use in under-developed areas including the
north-eastern region is much below the national average.
These areas with inaccessible terrain suffer from
non-connectivity with GRID and thus experience from
non-availability of energy. Renewable energy sector is
important in these regions to meet the energy
requirement in rural areas located in the dissected
hilly and mountainous terrain of this land locked
region.
To address the issue of energy requirement through
renewable sources and to find out ways to meet the
demand particularly in northeastern region of the
country a comprehensive approach is required from
professional working in the field.
In this backdrop, the Department of Energy, Tezpur
University is holding a National Conference on
“Renewable Energy for development of the under developed
areas with particular reference to North East India”
jointly with North-East Centre for Research &
Development, Guwahati, a constituent research centre of
Indira Gandhi National Open University, New Delhi.
The overall objective of the proposed conference is to
evolve an action oriented practical plan for growth and
development of Renewable Energy for the under-developed
regions of the country including north-east India.
